History of Yerevan
Yerevan, as already mentioned, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Some sources prove that the city is older than Rome. The first fortress was built here by the Urartian king Argisšti I in 783 BC. The remains of the fortress can still be found on the outskirts of the city. The city's convenient location made it a frequent transit point for trade routes from Anatolia and Russia to Persia. Yerevan became the capital only in the 20th century, when the urban form of the city was planned by the architect and builder Alexander Tamanyan. The original plan counted on approximately 150,000 inhabitants. As for the number of inhabitants, it has grown almost 10 times to date, and over time, the number of various buildings, boulevards, parks and attractions to which Yerevan annually attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world has "grown".
Transportation to Yerevan
Zvartnots International Airport is located 14 km from the city center. A new terminal was opened in 2006, which serves most flights. Weather in Yerevan
Armenia, with its capital Yerevan, lies in a dry continental climate inland between the Caspian and Black seas. Summers are long and hot here, winters are very cold. The most precipitation falls in April and May. Autumn is therefore the ideal time to visit. The highest peak of Armenia is Mount Aragac (4090 m). For history, visit the State Museum of Armenian History, located on sq. of Republic. An important building is the Opera House, home to the world-famous Philharmonic Orchestra. The Opera received the Grand Prix award for the architectural design. Other must-see sights in Yerevan include the Blue Mosque, the Matenadaran Memorial, and the Armenian Genocide Museum. For shopping, go to the large covered market, located a few steps from the Blue Mosque. The market offers its visitors a wide variety of goods, starting with souvenirs, textile goods, antiques, through food, spices, fruits, vegetables and ending with the sale of live animals. When visiting Armenia, don't forget to try the traditional cognac, which is produced in a factory in Yerevan, where a tour and tasting can be purchased.
