Berlin
Berlin has been the capital of Germany since 1991. Berlin is also an independent federal state. With a size of almost 900 square kilometers and a population of around 3.4 million, it is one of the largest cities in Europe. It is an important business, administrative, cultural, political and scientific center of Germany.
Accommodation
Berlin is one of the most visited cities in the European Union and the very rich accommodation offer corresponds to this. Given that the accommodation options in Berlin are really plentiful, great competition keeps the accommodation prices down, and compared to other cities, there is not such a difference in prices in the city center (Mitte area) and the outskirts of Berlin. In addition, Berlin has an excellent transport system
- even if you decide to stay outside the center, you can easily and safely get virtually anywhere in the city without any problems. You can stay here in hostels or apartments, guesthouses, motels, cheaper and more luxurious hotels, in the summer months you can even camp near Berlin. If you like to use the services of hotel chains, the good new is that there are practically all famous branches (eg. Eurostars, Crowne Plaza, Arcotel, Best Western, Novotel, etc.). The Meininger hotel chain has affordable prices.
Location and weather
Berlin lies in a flat area on the river Spree, west of the Polish border. The climate is the same as most of Western Europe, temperatures are around 23 degrees in summer and slightly above zero in winter. Precipitation occurs regularly throughout the year, sometimes snowing in winter. Interestingly, temperatures in the city center can be up to 4 degrees higher than on the outskirts of the city - this is because the center has such a large concentration of buildings with central heating that they can increase the temperature around them by several degrees.
History
Berlin was first mentioned in 1244, in the following years it held the position of an important city. In 1871, Berlin became the capital of the German Empire. At the end of World War II, the city half was almost destroyed.
Transport
There are two airports in Berlin - Schnefeld (approx. 18 km from the center) and Tegel (approx. 8 km from the center). Berlin, like most German cities, is well connected to the European motorway network. Berlin is a large city, but there is a relatively dense network of public transport. It is possible to use trains, buses, trams, metro or taxis to travel around the city. Taxis are cheaper than usual in other major European cities. Due to the size of Berlin, it is generally recommended to get a good map of not only the city but also city transport. Berlin is famous for its network of cycle paths and is extremely friendly to cyclists. There are several companies in the city where you can rent bikes.
Landmarks and culture
Alexanderplatz, the Reichstag (Reichstag) with its glass dome, from which there is an amazing view of the city skyline, is definitely worth seeing. The Brandenburg Gate with the statue of the quadriga is another symbol of the city. There are a large number of museums in the city - a good offer for art lovers is a three-day museum passport, which guarantees free admission to several state museums. A typical food is currywurst - sausage topped with ketchup and sprinkled with curry sold at street vendors. The city also has a rich nightlife, there are more than 200 clubs, Berliners are cocktail lovers, so there are plenty of cocktail bars. Berlin also has a large selection of guided walking tours - whether for historical monuments, tours of architectural gems led directly by architects, tours of alternative art and graffiti and much more. The main attraction for parents with children is the Aquarium, which is part of the Berlin Zoo. Shopping lovers might be interested in KaDeWe - Europe's second largest shopping center after London's Harrods. If you want to pay by card, it is generally recommended to always check in advance whether payment by card is possible and whether the shop or restaurant does not have a minimum limit for such payments (in restaurants, card payments can be allowed up to 30 EUR). For moments of relaxation and sports, there is a large park Tiergarten (ideal for barbecue picnics), which includes a zoo. The Berlin International Film Festival and the Berlin Marathon are held every year. Berlin is home to the Hertha BSC Berlin football club, the Alba Berlin basketball club, and golf or sailing on one of Berlin's many lakes is also very popular.
