The alpine town of Zermatt lies below the seventh highest mountain in the Alps, the beautiful Matterhorn (4478 m above sea level). This Swiss city is located in the German-speaking canton of Valais, in the southeastern part of Switzerland, near the border with Italy. Zermatt lies at an altitude of 1620 m above sea level and is surrounded by alpine giants. In its vicinity you will find 33 peaks with an altitude of more than 4000 meters.
Zermatt is a renowned ski resort, which corresponds to the quality of accommodation and its price. There are almost none cheap bed and breakfasts. However, the higher price of accommodation will be offset by quality. The apartments are more affordable. You can choose from one-room studios to large apartments with several bedrooms. Most luxury hotels in Zermatt include wellness activities, a swimming pool, a whirlpool and a sauna.
Zermatt began to be a tourist destination at the beginning of the 19th century, when the first accommodation facility was built here. It gained its popularity thanks to the tragic ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. The peak was first conquered on 14 July by the Englishman Edward Whymper. He had previously tried unsuccessfully to ascend from the Italian side several times. Sadly, the expedition was also famous for the deaths of four of the seven climbers.
In order for this tourist destination to maintain its typical character and social step with sustainable development, it has not been possible to drive here since 1947. All visitors and locals must leave their car in the covered car park in Täsch, 7 km away. From here, trains run on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn train every 20 minutes. It is best to walk around the city itself. You can also use some of the local electric or solar powered vehicles.
Zermatt is a popular place all year round. In winter, fans of white sports come here. The ski resort, which is connected to the Italian Cervinni offers 275 kilometers of slopes. The season here, thanks to good snow conditions, lasts from November to May. During summer you can go hiking or climbing here.
