History of Toruń
The history of Toruń goes back a long way. Already during the 8th - 12th centuries, an old Slavic fort stood on the banks of the Vistula River. The city itself was only founded by the order of the Teutonic Knights in 1233. Toruń then developed very quickly, mainly due to its advantageous location at the crossroads of trade routes. The city at that time known as Thorun (Thorn) reached its greatest growth during the 14th - 16th centuries. Decline came with it only in the 17th and 18th centuries. Toruń was first destroyed by Swedish raids and then annexed to Prussia for more than 100 years. At this time, the city begins to change under the influence of the German Empire. The city was returned to Poland only after the end of the First World War. Unlike other Polish cities, Toruń was not seriously damaged during World War II, even though the city was occupied by German troops. That is also why today it can boast of a large number of wonderful monuments.
Sights, attractions and activities in Toruń
As usual, you will find the most historical monuments in the Old Town. Here you can admire the Gothic monuments built of black bricks. Among the most charming sights of Toruń is the Old Town Hall, a complex of town houses from the 14th-16th centuries. century (baroque house U hvězdy), the Church of the Virgin Mary, the Cathedral of St. Jan with the largest Polish medieval bell or the remains of the city walls with several gates and watchtowers. Another interesting fact that you should not miss when visiting Toruń is that the famous astronomer Mikuláš Copernicus was born here. His life is closely connected with this city, and you can find his traces here almost at every step. You can visit his birthplace (today a museum - ul. Kopernika 15) or the memorial on Tržní náměstí.
