Wroclaw, is a city located in the southwestern part of Poland, near the Czech and German borders. It is the capital of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. With a population exceeding 630,000, it covers an area of 293 km2 and ranks as the fourth largest city in Poland. Wrocław is a beautiful historical city, which can be proud of, for example, one of the largest European squares "Rynek", reaching dimensions of 175 m in width and 212 m in length. Wrocław is often called the "Venice of Central Europe" thanks to more than 130 bridges and footbridges leading over the Odra River, which flows through the city. Wroclaw is remembered by many thanks to the organized European Football Championship, which the city hosted in 2012.

History of Wroclaw

Written mentions of Wrocław date back to the year 1000, from the area where Tum island is located. Although this fact is not confirmed, the founders were very likely Czechs. The name of the city is connected with the Czech prince Vratislav. In the already mentioned year 1000, a relatively large fortress stood here and the bishopric was also located here. The Polish state was divided in history, Wroclaw was annexed to the Czech state in this act of 1348. The city was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years' War, and in 1742 it fell to Prussia after the war and was renamed Breslau. The 19th century was a period of great industrialization, when a railway was built in Wrocław and at the same time railway carriages were produced here. The city suffered another big blow during World War II, when almost half of its territory was razed. The reconstruction was very demanding, it was not completed until the 1980s.
Transportation to Wroclaw
Wrocław Copernicus Airport is located in Wrocław. The main airlines operating flights to European and non-European destinations are Lufthansa, the leading Polish company LOT, Germanwings, SAS Scandinavian Airlines or Ryanair. For transportation to Wroclaw, you can also use the services of one of the bus carriers such as Eurolines or Student Agency. You can also go to Wrocław by train, to the main train station Wrocław Główny. There are regular connections on routes with leading European cities such as Hamburg, Dresden, Budapest, Prague and Kiev. Public transport in Wroclaw is represented by buses and trams. Boat transport is also widely used, not only by tourists, but often by local residents as well.
Sights, attractions and activities in Wroclaw
Wrocław is a vibrant metropolis offering extraordinary experiences every day. One day is definitely not enough to get to know her. History has really left a big mark here, in the number of historical monuments, where the Baroque and Gothic periods left traces here. The oldest part of the city is Tumský ostrov (Ostrów Tumski), where there are monuments such as the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, church of St. Jiljí, the Archbishop's Palace and the Church of St. Crisis. The town hall is a beautiful building built in the Gothic style on the Main Market Square (Rynek). This square is one of the largest in Central Europe. Various concerts, festivals and markets are held here throughout the year. But there are also many restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. On the square you will also find a number of very interesting houses with the names By Golden Sun or Golden Dog. The houses date from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Other important monuments and buildings worth visiting include the Wrocław Opera House, the Market Hall (Hala Targowa) or the Basilica of St. Elisabeth of Hungary, on the top of which is the highest viewing platform offering beautiful views of Wrocław and the surrounding area. As already mentioned, Wrocław is also called the "Venice of Central Europe". The city is literally dotted with bridges and various footbridges. The most famous include Most Tumski, Grunwaldzki, Most Zwierzyniecki or Most Rędziński. Speaking of bridges, you shouldn't miss one of the varied offers by boat on the Odra river that flows through the city. You can go on a cruise from several locations, for example from the island of Piasek, from the old market or from the Przystań Zwierzyniecka wharf. Some cruise ships and steamers also offer refreshments. Not only for children, but also for adults, there is the beautiful Wrocław Zoo, where you can find over 600 species of animals. Lovers of flowers and nature will certainly be thrilled by a visit to the Japanese or Botanical Gardens.
Sports in Wroclaw
Wrocław is also a city of sports, hosting a number of sporting events throughout the year. In 2012, the European Football Championship was held here, which took place at the Stadion Miejski we Wrocławiu with a capacity of 43,000 people. The leading football team is WKS Slask Wroclaw. The Wroclaw Marathon is an important sporting event that attracts athletes from all over the world.
