That's why it was here from 11-15. century many churches and monasteries were built and some of them can still be admired here (Gothic St. Martin's Cathedral). The University of Utrecht (Universiteit Utrecht) was founded in 1636. 30,000 students study here annually. Among its main fields are social and humanitarian fields, the faculty of natural sciences, and then the faculty of law and economics. The growth of the city was started by the opening of a railway connection with Amsterdam in 1843, until Utrecht eventually became an important railway hub for the whole of Holland. Sights, attractions and activities in Utrecht
The dominant feature of Utrecht is undoubtedly the 112-meter-high Dom Tower. The tower is part of the Gothic church De Dom and its height makes it the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. It probably goes without saying that the view from such a high altitude is breathtaking. After the challenging climb to the tower, you can relax directly in the Pandhof monastery garden of the Dom church. Another interesting place in the historic center of Utrecht is the water canal Oudegracht (Old Canal). Along it you will find countless shops, restaurants and cafes, where it is worth sitting for a while. We definitely recommend a boat ride along the canal itself. You can also visit a number of museums in Utrecht, most of which are located in the Museum Quarter, about a 10-minute walk from Central Station. The Fort Hoofdijk botanical garden, which is part of the Uithof university campus, is also worth a visit. The garden was founded in 1963 and today you can see over 6 thousand types of plants here.
