History of Vernazza
The first mention of Vernazza as a defended town dates back to 1080. Already at this time there was a naval base of Obertenghi, from which sailors repelled pirate attacks. After the conquest of Liguria, Vernazza became part of the Republic of Genoa. Due to constant pirate attacks, a defensive castle was built in Vernazza in the 15th century to protect the locals from pirates. In 1815, after the Congress of Vienna, Vernazza was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia. 46 years later, Vernazza became a part of Italy. In 2011, the city was hit by floods.
