History of Tiberias
The city of Tiberias was founded on the site of the destroyed village by the son of Herod the Great, Herod Antipas. During his reign, the city was the administrative center of the region and the capital of the kingdom. Tiberias became the center of Jewish culture after the Jews were expelled from Jerusalem. Throughout its history, the city has suffered numerous earthquakes and has also been ravaged by frequent wars. Tiberias became the center of the Principality of Galilee and the Kingdom of Jerusalem during the Crusades. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Tiberias became the destination of many scholars and rabbis who established a strong base and center of the Jewish religion. The 20th century was marked by violence that claimed the lives of several Jews. In 1948, a war of independence was taking place in Israel, which resulted in the displacement of Arabs. Today, the city is predominantly Jewish, almost 90 percent.
Transport to Tiberias
The city is connected to the transport network by highways No. 77 and 90. The nearest airports are in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
