Düsseldorf is a city in the western part of Germany near the border with the Netherlands. It lies at the confluence of the Düsseldorf and Rhine rivers. Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. With a population of over half a million, Düsseldorf is the seventh largest city in Germany.

History
Probably the most important date in the history is the year 1288, when Düsseldorf was granted city status. The city began to develop at the beginning of the 18th century under the leadership of Johann Wilhem II and also during the Industrial Revolution until the middle of the 19th century. During World War II, Düsseldorf was bombed by the British RAF. After the war, the city was quickly rebuilt into the center of trade.

The historic city center is not very large and most local attractions are within walking distance. If you need to get somewhere further from the center, it is not a problem to use local public transport.

Culture
Not only trade has made this thriving city famous. Countless cultural events and fairs take place here throughout the year. Probably the biggest cultural event is the annual carnival festivities, which always starts on 11.11 at 11:11 hrs and ends on Ash Wednesday. Other popular events include Kirmes (consecration), Christmas markets or Japanese Day in Düsseldorf.
Landmarks
Although Düsseldorf is a predominantly industrial city, it also offers many tourist attractions in the Old Town (Altstadt), the promenade along the Rhine embankment or the famous Königsalle shopping street called "Kö" in short.

A long term rivalry prevailed between Düsseldorf and Cologne. This rivalry between cities includes everything possible, including football (Fortuna Düsseldorf), carnival parades or beer. The locals like to enjoy their dark beer "Altbier".
Messe Düsseldorf
The Düsseldorf Exhibition Center (Messe Düsseldorf) is located in the northern part of the city. From the center there is a convenient train ride from the central station to Konrad Adenauer Platz. Or you can use public transport. Trams number U78 and U79 or bus number 722 go to the exhibition center.
