History of Ubud
We can say that the history of Ubud is the history of the island of Bali itself. According to legend, the city was settled during the 8th century by the Hindu monk Rsi Markendya, who came here from Java. The monk had the Gungung Temple built here. Other temples in the area were built over the next 400 years. Many rituals and dances from this time have also been preserved. The first travelers started heading to Ubud as early as the 1960s, yet the city has maintained its integrity as the artistic and cultural center of Bali to this day.
Transport to Ubud
You can get to Ubud by traditional Indonesian means of transport, bemo. Bemo are public minibuses (vans) that follow a fixed route. From Denpasar, there is a brown bemo from Batubulan bus terminal. The trip will cost you 8000 INR and takes about an hour. From the southern part of Bali such as Kuta, expect a price of around 200,000 INR. Perama travel agency buses also go to Ubud from Kuta, Sanur, Lovina, Bedugul, Candidasa or Padang Bai. However, Peramy buses will not take you directly to the city, but to the bus terminal about 2 km from the city. From there it is necessary to take a taxi.
Sights, attractions and activities in Ubud
In Ubud, you can expect a rich cultural offer and lots of activities such as dance performances or various courses, thanks to which you can immerse yourself in Balinese culture. Around Ubud you will find many temples and villages where art objects are made (although nowadays more for tourists). The romantic aspect here is completed by rice paddies and coconut palms. The city center itself is formed by the intersection of Monkey Forest Rd and Jl Raya Ubud, where there is also a busy market, Ubud Palace and the Hindu temple Pura Desa Ubud. From Ubud, you can also take trips to nearby areas. Visit to the monkey farm (Monkey Forest) and the village of Penestanan (where many artists live). You can go for a walk on the Campuan ridge, this trip measures about 8.5 km and takes you through the lush valley of the Sungai Wos river with a view of the Gunung Agung volcano and you will also see small villages and of course the surrounding rice fields. When visiting Ubud, you should also not miss the performance of one of the local dance groups. We can recommend you, for example, a performance at the ARMA cultural center.
