Guide Jablonec nad Nisou
The city of glass and jewelery - this is Jablonec na Nisou. It lies in the foothills of the Jizera Mountains in the valley of the river Nisa at an altitude of about 500 meters. It is located just a few kilometers southeast of Liberec. The fastest way to get here is by car, but you can come by bus or train. Jablonec is a great place for active holidays, which can be combined with the cultural possibilities of city life.
History
Jablonec nad Nisou was established as a coal settlement. The first glassworks was founded here in the 16th century. The massive development of the town was brought about by glassmaking during the second half of the 17th century, and at the beginning of the next century the production of jewelery was added. In 1866, the city was promoted to a city by Emperor Francis Joseph I. and supplies its glass and jewelery products to the whole world. Jablonec was being hit hardest by the Czechs' run from Nazism and the forced expulsion of the German population after World War II.
Activities
When visiting Jablonec nad Nisou, you should definitely not miss a visit to the Museum of Glass and Jewelery, where you can see a collection of glass, jewelery, coins, plaques and medals. Lovers of architecture will also enjoy themselves in Jablonec na Nisou. Here you will find decorated Art Nouveau houses such as the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross or the Municipal Theater. Functionalism is represented by the New Town Hall or the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. However, the most historically valuable will be the former rectory in Kostelní Street. Today, the cultural and information center of ethnographers Jana and Josef V. Scheybal is located here. If you want to play sports, go to the Mšeno dam just behind the city center. This artificially built dam is called the Jablonec Sea and is used mainly for walking or cycling trips and during the summer for swimming.
Trips to the surroundings
There are countless trips to the surroundings of Jablonec nad Nisou. You can go to the nearby Jizera Mountains. Take a walk in the valley of the rivers Jizera and Kamenice, where you can find castle Frýdštejn, the ruins of the rock castle Vranov - Pantheon or Bozkovská cave. The Kristiánov Glass Settlement, Ještěd, Sychrov Chateau and the Černá Nisa Bedřichov Dam are also nearby. There is really a lot to choose from.
