Zadar is located on the Adriatic coast in Northern Dalmatia. The population is around 80,000 inhabitants in an area of 194 square km. Zadar is a major ferry port and also the starting point for cruises bound for North Dalmatian Islands.

History of Zadar
The city's history dates back to the 9th century BC, when there was a settlement of the tribe Liburni. Over time, the area was conquered by Greeks, even later by Romans. In 1202 the city was plundered by Crusades. In the days of the Byzantine Empire, Republic of Venice had showed strong interest in the city, which they were able to take over for more than 4 decades. In the 18th century, the town of Zadar fell under the domination of the Habsburgs. To the end of the Second World War Zadar finally became a part of Croatia within Yugoslavia.
Transportation to Zadar
In Zadar, we find only one international airport, where flying companies such as Germanwings, Lufthansa, Danube Wings operate. The city has also a train station with direct routes to Zagreb or Split. Shipping is a very exploited mean of transport. The largest company carrying passengers to Dubrovnik and Rijeka is Jadrolinija. Local shipping companies then sail to the cities Mali Losinj, Dugi Otok or Premuda. Around the center of Zadar, you will do best to use your own feet to get around or you can also use local bus lines, which, however, end their operation after midnight. After that, there is no other option than to use the services of local taxi drivers.
Monuments in Zadar
Zadar is a city which has roots of antiquity. In this architectural style, you will find many beautiful sights. However, the loveliest and most valuable monument is the church Donat (Sveti Donat), built in the Romanesque style. Other sights are the Cathedral of St. Anastasia (Sveta Atošija), Romanesque church. Chrysogona (Sveti Krševan) or Renaissance Mainland Gate (gate Kopnena) belonging to the most important sights of the city at all. Worth a visit is certainly the local market with fruits, vegetables or plenty of fish.
Cultural and sporting events in Zadar
In Zadar there are held many festivals of various genresthroughout the year. The most famous music festival with concerts of classical music is under the name of Musical evenings at Donato. Furthermore, there are festivals of street culture or festival of Zadar Summer Theatre. Zadar has also its own football club NK Zadar with the base at the stadium Stanovi. Since Zadar is a seaside resort and main tourist destination especially in summer months, it offers a wide range of watersports and attractions. You can try scuba diving, sailing, windsurfing, beach volleyball and many other ball sports.
