Las Terrenas Guide
Las Terrenas is an increasingly popular tourist destination on the Samaná Peninsula in the northeastern part of the Dominican Republic. This Caribbean paradise offers turquoise blue sea lined with coconut palms, national parks full of tropical forests with waterfalls, simply anything, you could wish for. Las Terrenas is the tourist center of the Samaná Peninsula and you will find many all-inclusive hotels, as well as apartments, restaurants and souvenir shops. Despite the constant development of the resort, Las Terrenas has retained a calm and comfortable character.
Weather
The best time to visit Las Terrenas is from December to April, when there is a dry season. Temperatures reach a pleasant 27-30 degrees C. However, we can also recommend a visit during November and May, when the rainy season comes, but not so much precipitation. If you wish to avoid rain during your holidays, do not travel in the months from June to the end of October, when the hurricane season occurs, during this time the most precipitation falls.
Transport
Las Terrenas has become more open to tourists thanks to the opening of an international airport near Sánchez. Another option is an air connection to Santo Domingo and then use the new highway to Las Terrenas. Traveling around is possible either in the form of group trips, which is quite expensive or you can travel around the tourist attractions in a rented car. Just beware of driving, which is a bit wild at times. On the other hand, you do not have to worry about heavy traffic and the roads are in quite good condition.
Trips
The most popular beaches include Playa Ricón in the eastern tip of the peninsula, Playa Bonita and Playa Portillo. Be sure not to miss a trip to the 50-meter El Limón Waterfall. They will take you to the waterfall on local horses and then you can take a bath here. Another beautiful trip is to the island of Cayo Levantado or Isla Bacardi. The island also houses the Bahia Principe Luxury Cayo Levantado - All Inclusive (Adults only) and occupies a part of the island that is only accessible to hotel guests. You can buy trips in hotels or travel around by yourself, which is much cheaper and definitely more adventurous.
Accommodation
At Las Terrenas, you can choose between luxury hotels with all-inclusive services or apartment rentals. If we can recommend, try accommodation with all inclusive service, it is definitely worth it. The Dominicans themselves claim that they invented the all-inclusive service. Very good services are offered by the hotel chain Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo - All Inclusive. If you like privacy you can rent an entire villa such as Résidence Villas Les Hibiscus. From the apartments we can recommend Residence Las Dos Palmas or Caoba.
