History
Kašperské Hory was inhabited and founded during the 13th century thanks to mining. In 1345, Jan of Luxembourg elevated Kašperský hora to the upper settlement of a free upper town with its own town emblem. At this time, there were several gold mines and galleries. However, another monarch is behind the city's biggest landmark. Charles IV., who had the Kašperk guard castle built here as part of the Golden Trail (one of the medieval trade routes). From the 16th century, gold mining declined, which was gradually replaced by trade, glass, wood and paper. At present, Kašperské Hory is primarily a tourist center. The city is also associated with the writer Karel Klostermann whose family lived here. The city is thus a plot part of the author's novels and short stories.
Kasperk Castle
To the castle, which was built by order of Charles IV., you can go from Kašperské Hory following the tourist sign. The route measures a little over 3 km, but watch out as this is the highest royal castle in the Czech Republic, so a proper hike awaits you, but it is definitely worth it. You can then see the castle as part of one of the 3 routes. From the castle, you can then go to other attractions in the area, such as the nearby lookout tower on Sedlo or go on the nature trail Border Guards.
