Třeboň Guide
The paradise of ponds, forests, spas and cycling is all offered by South Bohemian Třeboň. It lies in the center of the Třeboň Basin between the Svět and Rožmberk ponds. Almost neighboring towns are nearby České Budějovice about 22 km and Jindřichův Hradec. Třeboň is a city monument reserve and the center of the protected landscape area Třeboňsko and a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The city has about 9,000 permanently registered inhabitants.
History
You will meet history everywhere. The beginning of the city dates back to the second half of the 12th century. The town flourished most during the reign of Vilém and Petr Vok's (last Rožmberk brothers) in the 16th and early 17th centuries. Other important owners then became the Swarzenbergs, who administered it until the end of World War I. During the 19th century, the first peat spa was established in Třeboň and spas developed.
Historical monuments
The largest historical monument in Třeboň is its Renaissance chateau, which is one of the largest chateau complexes in the Czech Republic. Here you can choose from several sightseeing routes, including a visit to the nearby Schwarzenberg Tomb in an English park not far from the Svět pond. The city center is dominated by Masaryk Square with the old town hall, arcades and the Marian column with a fountain. If you want to see Třeboň from a height, climb the tower of the old town hall. Another historic building is the local Bohemia regent brewery, founded in 1379.
Culture
Many traditional celebrations and events take place in Třeboň throughout the year. One of the most famous is the Anifilm International Animated Film Festival. Among the music festivals, it is the International Festival of Classical Music Třeboňská nocturna or the multi-genre music festival Around Třeboň. The biggest historical festival is the Historical Festival of Jakub Krčín (who was founder of many lakes in this area) with a rich cultural program. In August, the Fishing Festival and Spa Festival take place here.
Activities
Flat Třeboň and its surroundings are a popular destination especially for lovers of cycling and hiking. Here you will find many nature and cycling trails around the local ponds, such as the Rožmeberk Nature Trail or the World Nature Trail. Everyone will really choose their own path here. After a busy day, you can relax in one of the local peat spas for example in Aurora or in Bertiny.
