Darwin Guide
Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, one of the six states of Australia. It is located in the far north of the continent, off the coast of the Timor Sea. This small port town is a bit neglected compared to other Australian cities such as Sydney or Melbourne. But those who visit him will surely fall in love with his distinctive style. There are about 140,000 inhabitants, of about 60 nationalities. Due to the fact that it is located in the tropical belt, there are high temperatures around 30 degrees all year round. The dry season here is from May to September (winter on the southern continent). During the summer, however, it is very humid. Most precipitation falls during the summer from December to March.
History
The city was named in 1839 after the former sailor and famous naturalist Charles Darwin. The development of the town accelerated the gold deposit at the end of the 19th century. After the gold rush, the city's growth slowed due to difficult climatic conditions, remoteness and poor communication with other Australian cities. The city itself was then rebuilt several times. First after the Japanese bombing during World War II. Another catastrophe was the devastating cyclone Tracy in 1974. Today, Darwin is a modern thriving metropolis, with a strong industry and tourism.
Transport
The best way to get to Darwin is by air, from anywhere. Either from other parts of the world or from other Australian cities. If you travel by car in Australia, it is possible to drive to Darwin on the only highway that goes here "Stuart Highway". However, the journey here is very long from Perth or Sydney about 4000 - 4500 km. We recommend using the local public transport around the city, which is represented by buses. For those who want to stretch their body, a bike will suffice. There are many cycling routes in Darwin.
Activities
Directly in Darwin you can visit the Darwin Waterfront, which is a place to spend free time and relax. Here you will find a lagoon for swimming, grassy areas to relax and a restaurant. The history of the city is reminded by the Military Museum "Dawrin Military Museum". Those who want to cuddle with a crocodile should not miss a visit to Crocosaurus Cove in the very center of Darwin. This center is home to Australian reptiles, including the sea crocodile. The heart of Darwin's cultural life is the Mindil Beach Sunset Market. This market with more than 200 stalls with food, crafts and artistic performances takes place at sunset from Thursday to Sunday from 16-21 hours from April to October.
Litchfield National Park
If you are a nature lover, you should definitely not miss a visit to Litchfield National Park, which is located about 2 hours drive from Darwin. We will definitely recommend using the trip offer of one of the travel agencies. It is necessary to go to the park by car with all-wheel drive and the roads here are really very demanding. But it's worth it. The reward will be breathtaking nature, swimming in waterfalls and natural attractions such as giant termites, etc.
Kakadu National Park
If you are thrilled to visit Litchfield National Park, you can take a trip a little further from Darwin to Kakadu National Park. This amazing park is rightfully inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a unique reserve full of natural and cultural beauties over a huge area. There is an encounter with the history of the local population of "Aborigines", an incredible number of animals and natural beauties. It is simply a place you must see. However, keep in mind that the park can only be visited during the dry season, which is from May to October.
