History of Štrbský pleso
The history of Štrbské pleso begins at the end of the 19th century, when the Szentiványi family owned land here. They also built the first cottage here and thus started the gradual construction of tourist accommodation facilities. Favorable conditions for the first tourists to the previously difficult-to-access area were also ensured by the commissioning of the railway section Košice - Bohumín. The next step to speed up the development of tourism in Štrbské pleso was the opening of the cogwheel steam railway between Tatranská Štrba and the lake itself in 1896. Until that time, the transport of guests to the cottages by the lake was carried out by fiakristi (transporters with carriages). The hosting of the FIS World Ski Championships in 1970 helped the further development of this resort. New hotels Patria, Panorama and others were built here for this event. In order to improve transport, the steam cog railway, which had been replaced until now, was also replaced by a new electric one. Today, Štrbské pleso is a modern tourist destination that really has a lot to offer its visitors.
