History of Budva

History of Budva is 3,500 years old. And that makes it one of the oldest inhabited places on the Adriatic coast. During its long history the city was cotrolled by many nations. Already before BC, the city was seized by the Greeks. In the 2nd century, Romans had control over the area of Budva. In the 16th century Budva was attacked by the Turks and by the end of the 1st World War it belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Since 1918 it became a part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The natural disaster struck Budva in April 1979, when most of the old city was destroyed by a big earthquake. Fortunately, almost all buildings were restored to their original form.

The nearest airport (Tivalt Airport) is 20 km away. There are direct flights leaving from Belgrade and Zurich. More flights are heading to distant airport in Podgorica.

The dominant feature is the church of Saint John with preserved parts from Venetian painters. Next to the church, there is an Archaeological Museum, one of the largest in Montenegro. In the southern part, there is a fortress from the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Another important monument is the church Saint Sava from the 11th century. 

Beaches in Budva
