History
The history of Wiesbaden dates back to the Middle Ages. The oldest surviving building is the old town hall, which was built in the early 17th century, no other older buildings or houses have been preserved due to two large fires from the mid-16th century. Originally, Wiesbaden was the capital of Nassau, the capital of Hessen became after World War II. During World War II, Wiesbaden was bombed by the Royal Air Force, and the attacks destroyed about 18% of the townhouses. Since the end of World War II, the city has been an important base for the US armed forces, and Elvis Presley often visited the city. He also met his wife Priscilla here.
During the greatest expansion of the spa, the city was visited by many famous personalities, such as Johan Wolfgang von Goethe, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Richard Wagner or Johannes Brahms. Famous natives include tennis player John McEnroe (born at a military base) and F1 world champion Nico Rosberg.
