Sports in Prague

Running - perhaps the biggest regular sport event is the Prague International Marathon - these 42.195 m are run in May and the number of participants exceeds 10,000. It starts in front of the Rudolfinum, the track runs through the historic center and along the Vltava River, and traditionally ends in the Old Town square. It runs more or less flat. The number of runners is limited, so I recommend registering at least six months in advance. Small bonus - if you run the Prague Marathon 15 times, you can participate for free ;)

In spring, a half-marathon is run here, organized in the same way as a marathon by the RunCzech company. This year (2023) the date will be 1.4. on April Fools' Day. Along with the marathon and ½ marathon, they also organize various shorter accompanying runs for children and public, such as the Family mile or the Bambini run...

If you just want to go for a run, you will find plenty of suitable parks in Prague. For example, on Letná, where you can also roller skate, in the Hvězda nature reserve or at Ladronka. For fans of more rugged terrain, I recommend either Petřín or Vítkov.

Cycling – You can also cycle through Prague. A very pleasant is ride along the right bank of the Vltava river - from Libeň towards Klecánky - nicely flat and with beautiful views. If you want to get in shape, you can for example go from Podbaba through the Šárecký stream valley to Divoká Šárka. I do not recommend entering the historic center with bicycle, because there are tourists everywhere and the streets are mostly narrow. Recently, the Municipality has been trying to improve it, so we'll see... ;)

Swimming pools – there are several indoor swimming pools in Prague that operate all year round, as well as outdoor swimming pools that are only open during the summer. Probably the most famous indoor swimming pool is in Podolí (Podolská 74), then Šutka (Čimická 41), in the center YMKA (Na Poříčí 12) or AXA (Na Poříčí 40). The largest one is in the Aquapalace in Čestlice (Pražská 138). In the summer, you can go to Pražačka (Za Žižkovská vozovnou 2716), Petynka (Otevřená 1072) or the swimming pool in Ládví (Štíbrova 1776). If you like nature, I recommend the swimming pool in Divoká Šárka, which can be reached by a pleasant walk from the Divoká Šárka bus stop. If you prefer a natural swimming pool, you can go to the Džbán reservoir in Prague 6 or to the Hostivař dam in Prague 10. In Žluté Lázně (Podolské nábřeží 3), you can also swim in the Vltava river, whose water quality improves every year.

Tennis – various tennis tournaments are organized in Prague (e.g. Prague Open). If you want to play by yourself, you can choose from many tennis courts all over Prague - in the center there are courts for example in Štvanice (Štvanice 38), in Stromovka (Za Císařský mlýnem 33), in Vyšehrad (Lumírova 973), outside the center in Aritma (Nad Lávkou 6), in the CULS campus (Sídlištní 1073), in Košíře (V Stráni 11)...

Soccer – famous football clubs such as AC Sparta Prague, SK Slavia Prague or Bohemians 1905 are based in Prague. If you are a passive football lover, you can go to watch the matches of the 1st league. If you are active, you can build your own team and enroll in the 9th Hanspaul League, where you will play against teams of the same level of performance as you. You can progress to a higher league every year.

Ice hockey and ice skating - hockey fans will will enjoy themselves from autumn to spring. Currently, only 1 Prague club plays in the extra league, namely HC Sparta Prague. At the beginning of the hockey season, a few matches of teams from the most famous NHL hockey league take place in Prague. The most important matches usually take place in the O2 arena in Libeň. Prague has already hosted the Ice Hockey World Cup 10 times.

In winter, you can skate either at the indoor ice rinks during the times designated for the public (e.g. at Ice Arena Letňany) or you can skate at one of the outdoor public rinks, which usually operate from the beginning of December to the end of February. The biggest outdoor ice skating ring is usually at Letná.

Wild water - in the Vltava river in Trója, near the zoo, you will find an artificially created channel for running down wild water. World Cup competitions in water slalom are held here. Here you can try whitewater rafting, and the more experienced can also try kayaking. Or you can just stop here for a beer or an ice cream while walking along the Vltava and admire the art of kayakers. Our national team and foreign competitors also often train here.

Adrenaline – you can also find an outdoor climbing wall by the canal in Troja. You can find indoor walls, for example, in Smíchov (Křížová 6), in Holešovice (Bubenská 3) or in Vysočany (Ocelářská 16). Those who prefer to climb rocks outside will find themselves in Divoká Šárka, for example. Lovers of high rope obstacles can head to Vysočany (Rubeška 7). And while you're here, you can take a ride on the Prosek bobsleigh track (Prosecká 34b).

Sports areas - when you feel like playing sports all day, you can go to one of the sports areas, which offer various sports in one place. Among the largest are Hamr in Braník (Vltavanů 1542) or Pražačka (Za Žižkovská vozovnou 19/2716).

Summary - anyone who wants will definitely find an opportunity to do sports in Prague :)
