Pardubice Guide
The city of gingerbread and horse racing - that is Pardubice. One of the most beautiful East Bohemian towns lies at the confluence of the Elbe and the Chrudimka river in the Elbe lowlands. There are about 92,000 inhabitants in Pardubice, which makes it the tenth largest city in the Czech Republic. In terms of transport, Pardubice is easily accessible by both rail and road. Pardubice are located a little over 100 km away from Prague and on the other side it is less than 140 km to Brno or Olomouc. You can travel around the city by public transport or by bike.
History
The town of Pardubice was founded around 1340 and at thatit time belonged to the lords of Pardubice. Probably the most important personality is the first Archbishop of Prague Arnošt of Pardubice. The prosperity of Pardubice was brought by Vilém of Perštejn, who bought the town with the surrounding estates at the end of the 15th century. In the 20th century, Pardubice were linked to the pioneer of Czech aviation, Jan Kašpar, and the development of the chemical and electronic industries.
Attractions
In Pardubice, you should definitely not miss a tour of the Renaissance castle, where the East Bohemian Museum is located. Here you can see, for example, an exhibition of weapons or an extensive collection of Czech glass. Historic buildings can be found around Pernštýn Square, where the Pardubice City Hall and the Baroque monument Dům U Jonáše are located. You can find the modern buildings in the vicinity of Náměstí republiky, the famous Antoním Balšánek Theater is also located here. Pardubice is also a perfect starting point for visiting the surrounding places such as Kunětická hora Castle, Choltice Castle, the famous Kladruby stud farm in Slatiňany or the nearby Lázně Bohdaneč.
Action
The most famous Pardubice event is without a doubt the Velká Pardubická race. However, you can also see the racecourse outside of this important race with a guide, who will acquaint you with the history and stories of famous horses or their riders. An increasingly popular is also Aviation Fair, which offers a fun for the whole family. Other events include the city festivities "Pernštýn Night" or the Golden Helmet speedway races.
