History
The history of the local settlement dates back to prehistoric times, in written materials the name Poděbrady appears from about the middle of the 12th century. In the 1260s, King Přemysl Otakar II. built a stone water castle in a strategic location above the Elbe, which was gradually rebuilt into today's Poděbrady chateau. The Poděbrady estate experienced its greatest expansion under the lords of Kunštát, who acquired it from Charles IV. By far the most important figure of this family was George of Poděbrady, who was elected Czech king in 1458. Thanks to him, Poděbrady was later promoted to a town, they were endowed with important rights, privileges and the town emblem.
Like other Czech cities, Podebrady suffered considerable damage during the Thirty Years' War, and the city was looted several times by Saxon and Swedish troops. In addition, after the Thirty Years' War, Poděbrady was destroyed by a large fire and the town experienced a huge decline in trade and crafts. The turning point came at the beginning of the 19th century, when the city became an important crossroads of imperial roads, the railway was gradually built and several industrial enterprises were established. In 1905, a mineral spring was drilled in the courtyard of the chateau, which was a historical landmark for the town. After the end of the First World War, Podebrady quickly turned into a spa town and quickly gained a reputation abroad. The spa specializes mainly in the treatment of the heart and circulatory system.
Monuments
The dominant feature of Poděbrady is the chateau, originally a castle where, according to written monuments, the Czech King George of Poděbrady was born. The current appearance of the castle is the result of several thorough reconstructions - from the water castle, through the medieval fortress, to the late Baroque building designed during the reign of Joseph II. for military purposes. Visitors will be welcomed by the entrance gate from the 16th century with the coat of arms of the imperial eagle and the emblems of the Czech and Hungarian kingdoms.
In the city center there is a neo-renaissance statue of King George of Poděbrady from the 19th century, belonging to the top works of Czech monumental sculpture. In the second part of the square we will find the Marian Column, erected in memory of the victims of the plague. From the square we cross the bridge over the Elbe, pass the wooden bell tower and walk to the Mining Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Jiřího náměstí is then followed by a reconstructed spa park, where we find a unique Libenský colonnade from the 1930s.
Traditional cultural events include, for example, the Summer Colors Festival, which takes place by the local lake.
