History
Znojmo is one of the oldest Czech towns. Archeological foundings have proven evidence of the settlement since the Neolithic period. The area has been inhabited continuously since the arrival of the Slavs in the 6th century. The newly established villages in the castle grounds were promoted to a royal town by King Přemysl Otakar I. in 1226. During the 17th century, Znojmo was affected by several threats, from which it was long and difficult to recover. These included the occupation of the city by the Swedes, the threat of the Turks and also the devastating plague. Since 1870, there have been two nationally oriented associations - the Czech and German, between which there was considerable tension, and in October 1918 the so-called German South Moravia was proclaimed with the capital Znojmo. The city was annexed to the newly formed Czechoslovakia in December 1918. However, it became a permanent part of Czechoslovakia after the World War II.
Thanks to the favorable climate and also the suitable composition of the soil, quality varieties of white wines are grown in the area, and Znojmo wine has been supplied to Prague Castle since the Middle Ages. Rewally important local crop are cucumbers, which have been grown in the Znojmo region since the 16th century.
