History of Toronto
Toronto is a modern city with a history dating back to the recent past. In 1793, Governor John Graves Simcoe declared Toronto the capital of the new colony of Upper Canada. The name of Toronto at the time was York. The city was sacked in 1812 during the Battle of York. In 1834, York was renamed Toronto. William Lyon Mackenzie became the first mayor. In 1839 and 1904, the city was hit by devastating fires. Over the following years, Toronto expanded its boundaries and merged with adjacent municipalities. In 1854, a railway was built in Toronto that connects the city with the Great Lakes (Upper Great Lakes). During the 19th century, Toronto grew in importance and grew economically. These aspects have made it a popular destination for new immigrants. In March 2009, Toronto celebrated its 175th anniversary.
Transport to and around Toronto
The International Airport (Toronto Pearson International Airport) is approximately a 30-50 minute drive from downtown, depending on traffic. You can use several transport companies for transportation to the city center. These are, for example, TTC (Toronto Transit Commission), GO Transit, Missisauga Transit or Pacific Western Airport Express bus lines. Another airport that only serves short-haul regional flights is Billy Bishop Toronto City Center Airport. Hamilton International Airport is located 80 kilometers from Toronto and is served by the airlines WestJet and CanJet. The main bus station (Toronto Coach Terminal) is located on Bay Street. Companies such as Greyhound, Greyhound Quicklink, Ontario Northland, Shuttle, Coach Canada or Megabus are based here. Union Station is located between Bay and York Streets. The largest and at the same time the busiest company are VIA Rail. Regular services run on five lines, the most frequented of which is the Corridor, which takes you to cities such as Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston or Windsor. Another line is the Maple Leaf going to New York City, Buffalo, but also to Niagara Falls. Buses, metro, trams or so-called street cars (Streetcars) are used for transportation around the city.
Sights, attractions and shopping in Toronto
Toronto offers tourists a lot of interesting places to visit. The symbol of the city and formerly also the tallest building in the world is the CN Tower measuring 553 m, which offers a beautiful view from the terrace at a height of 447 m. Other attractions include the Royal Ontario Museum, the zoo (Toronto Zoo), the Art Gallery of Ontario with a collection of Canadian, American and African modern art. An interesting point is the local Bata Shoe Museum, founded by Tomáš Bata's wife on the occasion of their work trips to America in 1940. When visiting Toronto, you should not miss visiting the Toronto Islands, the building of the National Ballet of Canada or Hockey Hall of Fame. For shopping, you can go to the so-called P.A.T.H., which is the largest underground shopping center in the world with more than 1,200 shops with passages 29 km long, which is an area measuring 371,600 m2.

Toronto is a city alive and famous for sports. The most famous hockey team is the Toronto Maple Leafs, active in the NHL. The baseball team Toronto Blue Jays or the basketball players Toronto Raptors are no less famous. The year 2015 will be significant in the future, when the city will host a major sports event called the Pan American Games. They are held every four years and athletes from all over America come to them.
