Guide Alice Springs
The red heart of Australia - it is Alice Springs. It is located right in the middle of the continent, surrounded by the MacDonnell Ranges in the Northern Territory. Alice Springs is primarily the center of Australian Aboriginal culture. However, lovers of natural beauty will also enjoy themselves here. After all, this is where the largest monolith in the world, the sacred mountain "Uluru", is located.
History
Alice Springs has been inhabited by Indigenous Aboriginal people since ancient times. However, the history of the city itself is not that long. At the end of the 19th century, an international telegraph station was established here at the Todd River watering hole. The city was named after the wife of the station manager "Alice". Springs then refers to the place where the station was founded, at a watering hole. Surprisingly, the development of Alice Springs was brought during the World War II. At that time, the city served as an important stop for allied movements. Today, Alice Springs is mainly a tourist destination for people from all over the world.
Transport
Alice Springs has its own airport with connections from major Australian cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Cairns. Lovers of train transport will also enjoy themselves here. Alice Springs is one of the stops on the legendary The Ghan train, which connects Adelaide and Darwin. Of course, you can also get here by car or bus on the Stuart Highway from Darwin or Adelaide.
Activities
A great place from where you can see the whole city is the "Anzac Hill" viewpoint with a memorial for those who served to defend the country during the wars, in which Australia participated. Not far from the city you can visit the so-called "School of Air", which was founded in 1951 to educate children living in isolated places in Australia. This method of education is considered the largest virtual classroom in the world. Another long-distance activity is Roayl Flying Doctors, a non-profit organization that provides modern healthcare to people in remote parts of Australia. This service works on the principle of radio assistance. Animal lovers can stop at the Replite Center or the Kangaroo Sanctuary Kangaroo Rescue Station. Learn more about the richness of the desert area around Alice Springs at Alice Springs Desert Park.
Uluru
A visit to the Red Heart of Australia would not be complete without a visit to Uluru-Kata Thuja National Park, simply called Ayers Rock. The journey to Uluru from Alice Spring takes about 4.5 hours, so it is necessary to leave early in the morning or spend the previous night directly in the national park. The best view of the sacred mountain is either early in the morning or at dusk. The sun's rays create incredible color formations. Uluru closed last October and was handed over to the natives. However, this does not mean that tourists cannot enjoy it. It's just not possible to climb on it anymore. However, it is still possible to get around it and enjoy its beauty. Another beautiful place near Uluru is the Kata Tjuta Gorge or the legendary Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park.
