Ko Mak Guide
Ko Mak or Koh Mak is a small island in the eastern part of Thailand in the province of Trat. It is located in the Marine National Park between the islands of Ko Chang and Ko Kood. Its area is really small, 16 km2. In contrast to the neighboring islands, it is not mountainous at all and rubber trees are grown in most of its area. The island has about 800 permanent residents and most of them are members of one of the original families. The vast majority of people here make money by tourism, rubber growing or fishing.
Transport
Ko Mak can be reached by boat from the neighboring islands of Ko Chang and Ko Kood. From Bangkok, the fastest way is by air to Trat, where several flights fly every day. Then by boat from the mainland ports of Laem Ngop in Trat. You can then rent a motorbike or a bike on the island. Due to the fact, that the island is very flat, the bike is quite popular mean of transport.
Beaches
Ko Mak has 2 main beaches, Ao Suan Yai and Ao Khao Beach. They are also surrounded by most hotels, restaurants and shops. The tourist center of the island is located around the beach Ao Khao in the southwestern part of the island. The second largest beach is Ao Suan Yai in the northwest of the island. It measures about 3 km. There are also a number of smaller beaches on the island. Very beautiful are Ao Taan and Ao Talong in the northeast of the island.
Activities
Near the island of Ko Mak there are several private islands (Koh Kham, Koh Kradad) that can be visited. The island of Koh Kradat is definitely worth a trip. Transportation will be arranged at the Cinnamon Resort. Upon entering the island, it is necessary to pay a fee of 100THB, but this price also includes a tour of the herd of deer that are kept on the island. Another very popular activity is kayaking. You can kayak for example to Koh Kham Island, that is located opposite Ao Suan Yai Beach.
Accommodation
The island of Ko Mak is still developing in tourism, but today you will find a wide range of accommodation. Seavana Koh Mak Beach Resort and Koh Mak Ao Kao White Sand Beach are very popular. However, you can also rent an entire house in Ko Mak such as Pickle House or Corner House. Cheap accommodation is offered by Pano Resort or Bamboo Hideaway Resort.
