History
Zermatt began to be a tourist destination at the beginning of the 19th century, when the first accommodation facility was built here. It gained its popularity thanks to the tragic ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. The peak was first conquered on 14 July by the Englishman Edward Whymper. He had previously tried unsuccessfully to ascend from the Italian side several times. Sadly, the expedition was also famous for the deaths of four of the seven climbers.
Transport
In order for this tourist destination to maintain its typical character and social step with sustainable development, it has not been possible to drive here since 1947. All visitors and locals must leave their car in the covered car park in Täsch, 7 km away. From here, trains run on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn train every 20 minutes. It is best to walk around the city itself. You can also use some of the local electric or solar powered vehicles.
Activities
Zermatt is a popular place all year round. In winter, fans of white sports come here. The ski resort, which is connected to the Italian Cervinia offers 275 kilometers of slopes. The season here, thanks to good snow conditions, lasts from November to May. During summer you can go hiking or climbing here.
