History
The history of the city dates back to the 13th century, when it was founded and originally belonged to Denmark. In the 15th century, it was one of the largest and most visited cities in Denmark. In the 17th century, Malmö and the whole county of Skåne became Swedish property. In the 19th century, the city prospered and industry dominated. At the end of the 19th century, the port of Kockums was built here and Malmö became one of the largest ports in the world. Sweden was hit hard by the recession in the 20th century, the city's population was declining and unemployment was rising. Since 1995, the city has been modernized to its present form thanks to government projects.
Malmö is part of the international Öresund region and in July 2000 the Öresund Bridge, which measures 8 kilometers and connects Malmö with Copenhagen, Denmark, was opened (the entire route measures 16 km).

On the outskirts of Malmö is one of the best-preserved Empire mansions in Sweden (Herrgard).
