Bled guide

Bled is alpine town in the northwestern part of Slovenia, near the border with Austria. The city is situated at the glacial lake in the Julian Alps. Although the surrounding mountains in the Triglav national park reach a height of about 3000 m, Bled is situated at an altitude of only 501 meters. Not far from the city flows the river Sava. History of Bled

The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The first written note about the area mentions the year 1004, when Emperor Henry II donated the land and the Bled castle to Bishops of Brixen. After the fall of King Premysl Otakar II in 1278 the Bled fell under the rule of Rudolf Habsburg. In 1919, hotelier Ivan Kend bought the Castle and Lake Bled. During World War II, there was the seat of the German army. In 1960 Bled was awarded city status.

How to get to Bled

The nearest airport is in Ljubljana (approx. 80 km from Bled). Bled can be then reached by train or bus. Buses run quite often and the journey takes about 75 minutes.

Lake Bled

The lake is 2120 m long and 1380 m wide and belongs to main symbols of Bled. In the middle of the lake protrudes from water a small island (Blejska swelling) with the pilgrimage church of the Assumption. Bled island can be reached on traditional wooden boats called Pletna, the price for transport is around 12 Euro. On the north side of the lake, you will find Bled Castle (Blejska grad). The castle is open to the public all year round and admission is 8 euros.

Sport in Bled

From Bled comes two Slovenian Olympic medalists in this sport - Iztok Čop and Denis Žvegelj. Lake Bled has also hosted four World Championships in rowing in 1966, 1979 and 1989 and the last in 2011.
