The Veľký Meder Guide
Veľký Meder is located just a few kilometers from the border with Hungary in the southwestern part of Slovakia. The vast majority of locals are of Hungarian nationality. The city covers less than 56 km2 with a population of around 9,000. Vel'ký Meder is known primarily for its thermal springs and spas, which have a long tradition here. Vel'ký Meder is one of the most important tourist centers in southern Slovakia. Veľký means "great".

History of the Veľký Meder
The first name of the city was Megere. The town was first named Vel'ký Meder in 1918, but between 1948 and 1990 it was replaced by the name Čalovo, by which it is still known today. An important date in the past of Vel'kého Meder was December 15, 1466, when this village was elevated to a small town by King Matej and at the same time it was granted a charter with the right to hold three fairs every year. Matthew II then he subsequently exempted the locals from paying customs and duties. In 1702, the city was hit by an extensive fire, which significantly damaged it. Later, many epidemics raged here, taking many victims with them. In 1938, the city was assigned to Hungary, after the Second World War it again became part of Czechoslovakia. The first thermal swimming pool was built in 1973, which contributed positively to the development of the city and tourism.
Transportation to Veľký Meder
Vel'ký Meder is located near the border with Hungary. Approximately 140 km separates the city from the Czech border. You can get there from slovakia capital Bratislava through the towns of Ružinov and Dunajská Streda. You can travel further to Velké Meder by bus or train. A favorable offer is offered by the company Student agency with its Regio Jet railway lines, when you can purchase a package containing a return ticket from Bratislava to Vel'ký Meder and entry to the thermal baths. Many Czech companies offer bus connections.
Thermal spa in Veľké Meder
The biggest attraction of Vel'ké Meder are the thermal spas, which attract tourists year-round to healing thermal springs, wellness procedures, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, saunas and other attractions for children and adults. In nearby town Dunajská Streda, there is another fun water park - Thermalpark Dunajská Streda, where you can find healing springs with beneficial effects on the musculoskeletal system. In Vel'ký Meder itself you can see, for example, the tombstone of József Nagy Rátz, who was a very important and deserving personality of the town. There are two churches here - a Roman Catholic church dating from 1899 and a Calvinist church with foundations already laid in 1784. You can also find a statue of the Virgin Mary or a statue of John of Nepomuk in the town. The surroundings of the city will also be appreciated by fans of cycling, as well as hikers. The surroundings are criss-crossed with cycle paths and footpaths.
