History of Štúrovo
The place of today's Štúrovo was already inhabited in ancient times. The very creation of the first local settlement dates back to the 10th century, when the summer house Kakathvár was built here, hence the original name Kakath. Its favorable location in the river valley with the possibility of a ford contributed to the development of the settlement. After Turkish raids in the 16th century, the city fell under Turkish rule until 1683, when it was liberated. During this time, the Parkán fortifications were exhibited here, after which the city got its name. It was renamed Štúrovo only in 1948. Štúrovo has been known for its thermal springs since the last century. They were discovered here in 1952 and the first public swimming pool opened 21 years later.
