The town of Györ is located in northwestern Hungary, about 100 km from Budapest, 60 km from Bratislava and 10 km from the Slovak border. It is the eighth largest city in Hungary, often also called the "city of rivers", as it lies at the confluence of the Moson´s Danube and Raba rivers and is close to the Rabca and Marcal rivers. In addition, due to a thermal and healing springs found there, it became a very popular spa centre, one of the main reasons turists visit Györ.
Accommodation
Györ offers just over 60 accommodation options. International chains such as Danubius Hotels and Ibis hotels are also represented in the city. Most hotels or apartments are located in the city center (Fonte Hotel, Teátrum Panzió és Étterem), or near the thermal baths (RQ Boutique & Unique, Golden Ball Club Wellness Hotel & Spa, Arany Szarvas Fogadó and Captain Drakes Pub)
History
The surroundings of today's Györ have been inhabited since prehistoric times. Nomadic Hungarians appeared here at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries, initially setting up tents here, and later also houses. In the 13th century, Györ was severely damaged by both Mongol incursions and attacks by Czech troops under the leadership of Přemysl Otakar II. The city prospered greatly due to its convenient location between Vienna and Budapest. The development of the engineering industry was also very crucial, the city produced locomotives and other equipment. During World War II, many deportations of Jews to concentration camps were organized from there, as they represented almost 13% of the local population. Before the end of the war, Györ was continuously bombed for 3 days by the Allied air forces, however, the bombs miraculously avoided the historic center, which was preserved. After the Second World War, well-known Ikarus buses were manufactured in the city.
Monuments and interesting places
You can soak up the atmosphere of the ancient and at the same time still living city in the baroque center with burgher houses from the 17th - 19th century with an old street network. All this is dominated by the tower of the former bishop's palace. It is also worth mentioning the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which houses a rare relic - gilded silver helmet of St. Ladislav. One of the most beautiful baroque squares is the Bécsi kapu tér (At the Vienna Gate) with a Carmelite church. Széchynyi tér square is dominated by two towers of the Jesuit Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola and on the opposite side you will find the so-called Abbey House, which is considered the most beautiful house in the city. Győr has the second largest number of artistic monuments in Hungary. Finally, of course, we must once again mention the very popular and widely visited healing, thermal and adventure spa Rába Quelle, which is definitely worth a visit.
