History of Dresden dates back to the year 1206 when there was a small fishing village. In the 16th century, during the reign of the Saxon Duke Albrecht, the city began to develop. From 1806 to 1918, Dresden became the capital of the Saxons kingdom. In 1945, the city suffered major damage and loss of lives during the bombardment by the allied aircraft. The number of casualties is not yet accurate, but exceeds 20,000. Despite this unfortunate event, Dresden managed to repair almost all of their monuments, which can be now admired by hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.
North of the city, there is an airport (Klotzche-Dresden Airport). Flights are heading into the important German cities, but also to several European destinations such as London, Zurich and Moscow. The main station is located closer to the city center and therefore closer to all the major attractions of the Old Town. Prager Straße (Prague Street) is the most famous shopping street in Dresden, full of shops and shopping centers. Throughout the year, the city hosts a variety of events, festivals, celebrations and exhibitions. All-time favorite is the Dresden Christmas market, which lasts from 28.11. to 24.12 and is held at the historic Old Market Square.
