Jičín Guide
The fairytale town of Jičín is located in an even more fairytale environment of the Bohemian Paradise. You can find it about 85 km northeast of Prague or halfway between Liberec and Hradec Králové. Jicin is a very popular tourist destination. And not only for its good location close to the Bohemian Paradise and Prachovské skaly, but also thanks to the many historical monuments in the city itself, but also the surroundings.
History
Although the place of today's Jičín was inhabited before, it was founded around 1300 as a royal town. It was built around a regular rectangular square with a checkerboard network of streets. The greatest prosperity of the city was brought by the government of Albrecht of Wallenstein, who rebuilt and improved the city. The historical character is still visible here. In the 19th century, Jičín became the center of the Czech national revival. The city experienced another boom during the First Republic. Architect Čeněk Musil and writer Václav Čtvrtek author of Czech fairy tales about Rumcajs, Mance and Cipísk.
Historical monuments
The heart of Jičín is the almost regular Wallenstein Square, which is bordered on all sides by an arcade. The biggest dominant feature of the square is the Jičín chateau, which now houses the Regional Museum and Gallery. Another monument that you should definitely not miss when visiting Jičín, is an architectural gem from the beginning of the 17th century, the Wallenstein Loggia. A 2 km long linden alley leads from the city center. For history lovers, we can also recommend a visit to the surrounding castles Kost and Trosky.
Activities
Many cultural events take place in Jičín throughout the year. The biggest ones include the Wallenstein festivities or the children's festival Jičín, the city of fairy tales.
